Thailand’s largest mobile operator, Advanced Info Service (AIS), is conducting tests of mobile WiMAX solutions using Motorola’s WiMAX Access Point-400 platform. The operator is evaluating the performance of real-world applications over the mobile WiMAX networks as well as comparing the customer usage models in metro, suburban and rural areas.
AIS started trials in Q1 2008 using Motorola’s platform in Bangkok and Lamlukka.
“Instead of focusing only on technology features, we evaluate how customers apply applications over WiMAX network in real life,” said AIS CEO Vikrom Sriprataks, via a statement. “The results have been outstanding, and it gives us an insight into how we can offer new services through WiMAX.”
During the trials, AIS put the WiMAX technology through the paces with various applications including substitution of phone line, content delivery platform and high-speed Internet connection. AIS considers WiMAX an effective replacement for ADSL in cities and suburban areas.
