It doesn’t take a genius, or a genius bar, to figure out that the App Store has proven itself virtually unsurpassable. Apple today announced that more than 3 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store.
The App Store opened on July 11, 2008, with 500 third-party applications, 125 of which were free. The store proceeded to chalk up 10 million downloads in its first week of business. On April 23, 2009, the App Store recorded its 1 billionth app download.
Downloads have picked up exponentially, with about 1 billion of the store’s total 3 billion downloads happening in the last three months.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs took the opportunity to proclaim the company’s supremacy in the app world. “Three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months – this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon,” Jobs said in a statement.
According to Apple, more than 115,000 applications are now available for download on the App Store.
