Apple today announced that over 15 billion applications have been downloaded from its App Store by the more than 200 million iOS users worldwide.
According to a statement, the App Store now offers more than 425,000 apps, as well as 100,000 applications for Apple iPad tablet. Apple says it has paid developers over $2.5 billion to date. That would put total revenue generated from applications at the App Store at just over $8 billion.
Analytics company Distimo recently forecast that the Android Market will overtake the App Store in total downloadable applications by the end of July. In an April report, Distimo estimated that as of June 2011, the Android Market would feature 332,114 downloadable apps, with a growth rate that would put that number above the App Store by August.
