Apple has updated its App Store guidelines to include an outright ban on any applications that disclose otherwise unpublished police DUI checkpoints.
According to the company’s recently revised App Store guidelines, “Apps which contain DUI checkpoints that are not published by law enforcement agencies, or encourage and enable drunk driving, will be rejected.”
The move comes in the wake of recent hearings before the Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Insurance Subcommittee on consumer privacy and protection in the mobile marketplace, which were chaired by John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV, (D-W. Virginia).
During the hearings, Rockefeller was particularly aggressive with Google on the issue of apps in the Android Market that publish the location of DUI checkpoints, allowing drunk drivers to circumvent those areas.
Google has said it is looking into the matter, but has yet to pull any of the apps from the Android Market, saying that the apps aren’t in violation of any of the store’s current policies.
