Apple’s Rumored Launch Date is Just in Time for the Note 8’s Retail Debut

By Diana Goovaerts | August 23, 2017

Rumors are circulating that Apple could reveal its new iPhones and Apple Watch on September 12.

The date was reported by Mac4Ever, and fits squarely in the traditional mid-September timeframe for Apple’s fall product launches. If that date holds, Apple’s latest iPhone debut will fall around three weeks after Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 launch, which was held Wednesday, and just in time for the Note 8 to hit stores on Sept. 15.

In addition to earlier rumors about an under-screen fingerprint sensor and anew full-front display, fresh reports indicate the new iPhone 8 will be available in three storage capacities. 9to5Mac cited Chinese leaker GeekBar, saying the iPhone 8 base model will be 64 GB, while a mid-tier model will have 256 GB of storage, and a new high-end option would offer a whopping 512 GB of storage.

Bloomberg also recently reported that the new iPhone will come with a 3-D facial recognition technology that will be able to unlock the device in “a few hundred milliseconds” – a feature Samsung debuted with its Galaxy S8 smartphone earlier this year.

Apple’s new device will be up against Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 8 smartphone, which was unveiled at an event in New York City on Wednesday.

The new Note 8 features a massive 6.3-inch display, as well as dual horizontal 12mp rear-facing camera lenses, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor (hello, Gigabit LTE capabilities), 64 GB of storage, 6 GB of RAM, and an upgraded S pen.

The Note 8 is the vehicle for a company hoping to rebound from last year’s Note 7 fiasco. That recall cost Samsung more than $6.5 billion.
