Following in the footsteps of T-Mobile, AT&T has launched native video calling as the latest feature in its suite of LTE Rich Communications Services (RCS).
Now, after installing a software update, AT&T customers will be able to place a video call by touching the video call button on their device keypad. T-Mobile customers received access to the same feature in September.
However, AT&T’s rollout of the feature is extremely limited thus far, as it is only available on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active and even then only in areas where HD Voice calling is available.
AT&T’s continued RCS rollout – which has heretofore included Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Wi-Fi calling, NumberSync and the aforementioned HD Voice features – now also includes Advanced Messaging.
With Advanced Messaging AT&T customers will now be able to send high-resolution photos and large video files up to 10 MB per attachment. The feature will also allow customers to see when their messages are delivered, read and when others are typing a response.
Like video calling, only a select few users will have access to this service for the time being. Advanced messaging is currently only available on the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini and S6 Active, and only works when both people on the message have access to the service.
