Bluetooth 2.2 is expected as a new specification in mid-2009 and will be available in versions for Wi-Fi and ultrawideband (UWB) antennas, IMS Research said this week.
The Wi-Fi version will be marketed at Bluetooth 10x while the UWB version will be called Bluetooth 100x. Faster speeds will enable applications such as video streaming and wireless printing, analyst Chris Schreck wrote.
The 10x version will appear first because Wi-Fi devices are already popular, although both versions should be common within five years, he said.
A representative for the Bluetooth Special Interest Group was not available for comment this morning.
