Bytemobile Aims to Take Bite Out of Explosive Video Demand

According to a marketing executive at Bytemobile, Cisco is wrong about mobile video representing 66 percent of all mobile data traffic by 2015. Well, mainly just wrong about the timing. It’s going to happen a lot sooner than that, like closer to 2012, says Ronny Haraldsvik, vice president of global marketing at Bytemobile.

Some of Bytemobile’s operator customers already are seeing mobile data account for more than 60 percent of traffic. That’s part of the reason the Santa Clara, Calif., company is rolling out its Unison 6.0 platform, which includes new optimization for streaming media services and high-definition (HD) content to mobile devices.

Bytemobile is engaging in more go-to-market partnership agreements, like the one it has with IBM. Bytemobile and IBM are working together to deliver Web and video traffic optimization, capacity management and analytics services for more than 30 mobile operators worldwide. Together, Bytemobile’s Unison Smart Capacity Platform and IBM’s BladeCenter network servers are deployed at the core of operator networks. Bytemobile’s video optimization capabilities reduce mobile data traffic by 40 percent to 50 percent, freeing up capacity while providing an improved user experience and faster access to multimedia content.

New features in Unison 6.0 include streaming policy control for major audio and video services, HD optimization for quality mobile HD video viewing and video caching with adaptive optimization to balance network performance across viral and long-tail video content, resulting in faster download times and bandwidth improvements.
