Bytemobile Gives Update on Mobile Video Traffic Trends

By Staff Author | June 21, 2011

If you think you’re getting better quality YouTube videos by using the browser on your iPhone instead of using the pre-installed app, you’re onto something.  Bytemobile says that’s indeed the case – users will get a better experience using the browser, but that involves more steps, and people tend to want the shortest route from A to B.

“What we found in the end, when they have a better experience, they watch more video,” says Bytemobile Mobile Analytics Manager Anna Yong. And voila, Bytemobile offers optimization technology that will improve the user experience, thereby leading to more usage.

Here are some other highlights from Bytemobile’s second-quarter Mobile Analytics Report:

• There’s a 12-hour busy time when the majority of mobile data traffic is traversing the network, and that’s from noon to midnight. Video generates 40 percent to 60 percent of total mobile data traffic.

• Depending on time of day and network conditions, mobile videos stall anywhere between 5 percent and 40 percent of the time.

• Subscribers on wireless networks optimized for video consume double the mobile video content than those on un-optimized networks.

Besides sharing its latest mobile traffic data, Bytemobile is offering new product enhancements to its traffic reporting and analytics solution. The company says its new Smart Capacity Mobile Analytics solution provides network insights that are unavailable through traditional analytics technology.

The company will be showing mobile network operators the benefits of its Smart Capacity Mobile Analytics – as well as the 30 percent to 50 percent capacity improvement achievable with Unison Smart Capacity for Video – at the IBM Innovation Center in La Gaude, France, in early July.
