Wait a minute on rushing those femtocells to market. So says Stuart Carlaw of ABI Research.
Carlaw says femtocell providers should make sure the miniature in-building base stations provide the kind of use that consumers want. Femtocells are starting to be deployed by some carriers as a way of improving in-building coverage for consumers while also fighting dual-mode Wi-Fi solutions in the home.
Carlaw says it could take five years before carriers make money from femtocell solutions, so they should make sure that carriers have a services focus. He suggests a service bundle that links devices in a connected home. It is imperative carriers capitalize on Web 2.0 services such as “cache and carry,” where rich media files can be swapped within the femtocell.
