It looks like T-Mobile USA and U.S. Cellular are doing their best to compensate for lacking the iPhone.
Both carriers announced today that they will offer Samsung’s latest superphone, the Galaxy Note II, successor to the original Galaxy Note.
While Samsung today announced that Sprint, Verizon Wireless and AT&T, will also offer the Note II, the stylus-driven “phablet” is a boon for T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular, who have been left out of the iPhone 5 preorder blitz.
Apple’s iPhone 5 has done exceptionally well already. Both AT&T and Apple reported record preorders. Apple said it filled two million preorders in the first 24 hours the device was available online. That’s double the previous record of one million held by iPhone 4S.
U.S. Cellular is the only carrier of the five that has put out specific pricing for the Note II. The 16GB Titanium Gray Galaxy Note II will be $299.99 with an instant rebate for those who purchase during the online presale. It will be $299.99 after $100 mail-in rebate when it arrives in stores.
Samsung strategically unveiled the 5.3-inch quad-core Galaxy Note II on Aug. 30 at the IFA electronics conference in Berlin, just ahead of Apple’s Sept. 12 unveiling of the iPhone 5.
Getting the latest Note into as many hands as possible, through as many carriers as possible, is important for Samsung as well as for smaller carriers like T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular. Samsung’s multi-carrier strategy has served it well in its fight against Apple’s iPhone. The company announced back in March that it had sold 5 million of the original Galaxy Notes globally.
Samsung is still picking up the pieces in the wake of a jury’s decision to award Apple $1.05 billion in damages, when it declared that Samsung had “willfully” copied Apple’s iPad and iPhone.
An injunction hearing for that case is scheduled to take place tomorrow.
