China Mobile, NSN Complete Live VoLTE Test on TD-LTE

Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) announced the completion of a VoLTE test on China Mobile’s TD-LTE network.

NSN performed a live VoLTE call and ran through multiple test cases on a pre-commercial network in Fuzhou. NSN deployed its enhanced Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (eSRVCC) solution during the testing process.

“Our hard work in integrating the VoLTE solution in China Mobile’s pre-commercial TD-LTE network paid off when we were able to complete this set of tests ahead of our competition,” Markus Borchert, president of Greater China Region at NSN, said in a statement.

NSN announced its solution will be available commercially in March for both TDD and FDD LTE variants.

China Mobile only just launched its TD-LTE service in December. The rapid follow-up with VoLTE stands in contrast to major U.S. carriers like AT&T and Verizon, both several years into their respective LTE deployments and still without VoLTE. Both are expected to launch VoLTE service and devices in 2014. 

T-Mobile, which last year bought MetroPCS and inherited its VoLTE service, could be planning to launch its own this year. Sprint recently partnered with Broadsoft for VoLTE but did not offer a date of when the service would become available.
