Clearwire has launched its 4G network in Nashville days after it said it was beginning to turn on service in major metropolitan markets, including New York and Los Angeles.
Clearwire’s 4G service covers nearly 1 million people in Nashville, extending as far north as Goodlettsville and as far south as Murfreesboro. The company’s 4G network is now commercially available in 53 markets across the country.
Clearwire is also prepping its network for commercial launches in key metropolitan areas.
Company spokeswoman Susan Johnston said in a statement on Monday that the company had started “operational readiness activities” in New York, Los Angeles and other metropolitan markets to prepare its network ahead of its planned commercial launches later this year.
The company is offering discounted 3G/4G service during the construction phase, but 4G-only mobile services are not yet being offered as part of this pre-launch promotion. Cleawire’s 4G coverage will not be complete until its network officially launches.
Clearwire said its subscribers may also get 4G coverage in other cities where it plans to launch this year, including San Francisco, Miami, Denver and Pittsburgh, as it begins switching on its network ahead of commercial availability.
