Clearwire began wrapping up its plans to cover 30 million people by the end of the year with the launch of its mobile WiMAX network in Seattle and a major expansion of its retail operations.
The Seattle network now covers more than 1,300 square miles and about 3.1 million people in the Puget Sound market. Clearwire previously said that Comcast and Sprint would begin reselling its mobile WiMAX service in the Seattle area beginning in early December, but no resale agreements in the Puget Sound market were announced today.
Clearwire also beefed up its retail operations today. The company named local general managers and announced in-market consumer event dates for Dallas/Ft. Worth, San Antonio and Austin, Texas; Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh, N.C.; Chicago; Honolulu and Maui, Hawaii; and Seattle/Puget Sound.
In addition, Clearwire is offering unlimited home Internet access for $30 per month for the first six months of service with a two-year contract. That deal is available on its consumer Web site, clear.com.
