Firefox today announced the imminent arrival of the Alcatel One Touch Fire and the ZTE Open, the first two phones running Firefox’s operating system, will be coming soon to Deutsche Telekom (DT) and Telefónica.
Firefox’s press release was short on details about pricing and specific dates, but Telefónica revealed this morning that the ZTE Open will be available starting July 2 and will be priced at 69 euros (approximately $90). The Spanish carrier also said that the price would include 30 euro balance for prepaid customers.
At Mobile World Congress in February, Mozilla announced significant carrier and OEM support for its HTML-based Firefox OS.
Mozilla announced 18 carrier partners putting their weight behind the new web-based OS, as well as the initial devices from Alcatel OneTouch and ZTE along with upcoming handsets from LG and Huawei. With Spain checked off the list, Firefox OS devices are still scheduled to reach consumers in Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, and Venezuela.
Besides DT and Telefónica, operators committed to the open Web device initiative include: América Móvil, China Unicom, Etisalat, Hutchison Three Group, KDDI, KT, MegaFon, Qtel, SingTel, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia Group, Telenor, Telstra, TMN and VimpelCom.
Hon Hai, or Foxconn, announced the hire of 3,000 new employees to push along its development of devices using Firefox OS.
