Facebook yesterday announced new apps for iOS devices. The new mobile version of the app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch focuses mainly on increasing the speed of the app. According to the social media company, the new app open fast, scrolls smoother and renders photos immediately. The app is available now in the Apple App Store for free.
A number of high-profile companies in the wireless space and other industries have formed a new group aimed at improving the accuracy of indoor location technology. The In-Location Alliance‘s founders include Nokia, Broadcom, Qualcomm, Samsung and Sony Mobile. In all, 22 companies have joined the effort. The alliance says that better indoor positioning could lead to services such as real-time navigation inside a building and finding the precise location of objects or people.
T-Mobile USA has come out with a $100 prepaid Android smartphone manufactured by ZTE for customers shopping at Walmart and Target. The Concord is targeted at customers buying their first smartphone, and features a 3.5-inch touchscreen and 2-megapixel camera. The device runs on T-Mobile’s 3G network and cannot access the company’s high-speed HSPA+ service, which it markets as 4G. The Concord is currently available at Walmart and will land at Target on Aug. 26.
AOptix Technologies has raised $42 million in a Series E funding round, bringing its total investment financing to $123 million. The company’s products include long-range, high-bandwidth wireless tecdhnology for mobile backhaul. The cash will be used for product development.
