The Rural
Cellular Association (RCA) is renewing its calls for the government to
impose stringent conditions on its pending approval of Verizon’s $3.9 billion
AWS spectrum purchase. In a Wednesday blog post, RCA President and CEO Steve
Berry urged the FCC and Justice Department to only clear the transaction if
Verizon agrees to divest spectrum, establish interoperability in the 700 MHz and
AWS bands, agree to roaming agreements with smaller competitors and conditions
on access to backhaul and offload capacity. The group is concerned that the AWS
deal will consolidate Verizon’s hold on spectrum resources and make it harder
for smaller wireless providers to compete.
