U.S. Cellular is using Gemalto’s technology to authenticate subscribers on its LTE and CDMA networks and manage secure access to LTE services. The platform will “help provide our customers with a dependable and reliable 4G LTE experience,” Michael S. Irizarry, U.S. Cellular executive vice president chief technology officer, engineering and information services, said in a statement. The company will use Gemalto’s LinqUS Advanced Connectivity platform, which builds on its LinqUs Advanced OTA platform and incorporates its UpTeq LTE subscriber module.
The proliferation of smartphones is affecting more than just wireless operators. It is also affecting the agency that authorizes them, the FCC. The commission said Wednesday it is taking steps to “ensure that its equipment authorization program will continue to operate smoothly in the face of an ever increasing number of applicants and applications for equipment authorization for wireless devices.” It is increasing the number of identification codes it assigns to new applications and is looking into ways to improve the authorization program itself, including clarifying or modifying the administrative requirements and the responsibilities of the telecommunications certification groups that perform equipment certification.
Openet’s latest funding round has netted the telecommunications software company $21 million in new capital, comprised of $16 million in equity and $5 million in long-term debt. The Series D round was led by NS Solutions, a Japanese information technology provider operating as a subsidiary of Nippon Steel. The cash will be used to find new distribution channels, develop and manage products, and in deployment engineering. Openet has raised about $55 million in funding since 1999.
Paydiant, a Boston-based mobile payments provider, today announced that pcAmerica has integrated the Paydiant mobile payments software into pcAmerica Cash Register Express and Restaurant Pro Express point-of-sale (POS) solutions. Using the integrated offering, any of pcAmerica’s 50,000 retail and restaurant POS software users can now accept Paydiant-powered mobile payments and offers. pcAmerica customers can also support a number of other compelling mobile wallet capabilities including pay online; offer and coupon creation, selection and redemption in store and online; and digital receipts and refunds by updating to the latest version of the pcAmerica software.
