First News Briefs for October 29, 2012

By Wireless Week staff | October 29, 2012

Verizon Wireless landed the Nokia Lumia 822 today, the Finnish company’s latest Windows Phone 8 handset. The LTE smartphone comes loaded with a 1.2-megapixel camera and a number of apps spanning navigation and entertainment. Customers also have the option to buy a case for the device which supports wireless charging. The debut of the Lumia 822 comes the same day as Microsoft’s Windows Phone event in San Francisco.

Alvarion has sold its claims right against Nortel Networks for $5.2 million. The transaction, which follows the vendor’s recent intellectual property sale, is expected to close within 10 days. CFO Lior Shemesh said the cash influx from the two deals “significantly strengthened our balance sheet” and placed the company in a “better position” to follow through on its turnaround plan.

Cincinnati Bell has tapped Devicescape for Wi-Fi offload. The service will be preloaded onto all of the regional carrier’s new Android devices, and current devices can get the service through downloading the CB WiFi app off Google Play. Devicescape says its offload solution includes access to more than 11 million Wi-Fi hotspots.

Pantech is equipping its newest line of Android smartphones with Mocana’s VeloDAR mobile security solution. The technology uses FIPS 140-2 certified encryption to protect data-at-rest (DAR) on the internal memory of the Pantech device, as well as any data stored on SD cards used with the device. Mocana’s solution will be added to upgrades for “several” of Pantech’s best-selling Android smartphones and tablets, including the Flex.
