First News Briefs for September 4, 2012

By Wireless Week staff | September 4, 2012

Huawei has formed a joint venture with China-based information technology consulting and outsourcing firm iSoftStone. The telecommunications vendor will own one-quarter of the company, while iSoftStone will control the remaining 75 percent. The partnership aims to strengthen iSoftStone’s presence in the IT services industry, and Huawei has agreed to purchase a “significant amount” of services from the joint venture over the next three years.  The joint venture has registered capital of $15.75 million and will officially begin operations in January of next year.

The Wireless Power Consortium says it has certified 110 products, allowing them to carry the Qi logo. The trademark indicates to consumers that a product is capable of wireless charging. The latest round of consumer goods to pass Qi certification include smartphones like the LG Optimus LTE2 and the Panasonic Eluga, as well as a range of other products such as gaming controllers, Blu-ray recorders, alarm clocks and various charging pads.

Verizon Wireless is set to launch a new device on Thursday billed as combining the functionality of a smartphone and tablet. The LG Intuition sports a 5-inch display, NFC, DLNA, front- and rear-facing cameras, a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM. The device will be available online Sept. 6, hitting retail stores Sept. 10. Customers can get the Intuition for $200 with new two-year contract.

Allot Communications has closed its acquisition of Oversi Networks, first announced on July 31. Allot is using the transaction to add new caching technology to its existing video services, helping reduce delays in video playback on wireless networks.

The FCC may revisit its policies on spectrum consolidation, according to a report last week in The Wall Street Journal. The commission plans to vote on a proposal to consider changes to its spectrum screen on Sept. 28, the date of its next open meeting.  Items said to be under consideration include whether valuable low-frequency spectrum should be regulated differently than less valuable high-frequency spectrum.
