FirstNews Briefs: AT&T, Ericsson, Qualcomm

By Diana Goovaerts | December 30, 2016

AT&T this week announced an end date for promotional pricing of its new DirecTV Now mobile video streaming service.

Launched last month, the service includes four channel tiers: a $35 per month option offering 60+ channels, a $50 level offering 80+ channels, a $60 tier offering 100+ channels, and a $70 option offering 120+ channels. To boost uptake of the service, AT&T has been offering the 100+ channel tier at a promotional price of $35. However, the carrier on Thursday announced that promotion will be coming to an end on January 9.

Ericsson will be hosting a SuperSession on 5G at next week’s CES show Thursday, Jan. 5 at 10:15 a.m.

Called “Stoked About 5G,” the super session will explore the future of mobility with 5G. Speakers are slated to include Hanno Basse, CTO of 20th Century Fox Film, Alex Choi, CTO at SK Telecom, Fathi El-Dwaik, VP of Information and Communication Electronics at BMW Group, and Ulf Ewaldsson Sr., Chief Strategy and Technology Officer at Ericsson. The panel will be moderated by Recode Senior Editor Ina Fried.

Qualcomm on Friday announced it has signed a 3G/4G global patent licensing agreement with Chinese smartphone company Meizu Technology. According to Qualcomm, the agreement includes provisions for Meizu to “develop, manufacture and sell CDMA2000, WCDMA, and 4G LTE (including ‘3-mode’ GSM, TD-SCDMA, and LTE-TDD) complete devices” in exchange for the payment of royalties.

The move comes little more than six months after Qualcomm sued Meizu for patent infringement in China, Germany, France, and the United States. The new deal resolves those disputes, and both Qualcomm and Meizu have agreed to terminate or withdraw their respective patent litigations.

“Today, we are focusing on our vision with better clarity, and striving to become the top designer brand for high tech products. For this goal, we are determined to remove all obstacles, focus on products, and focus on the future,” Meizu President Bai Yongxiang said in a statement. “We are confident this cooperation with Qualcomm will add tremendous value to our user, channels, shareholders, and employees.”
