• Japanese handset maker Kyocera reported a 71.5 percent drop in profit for its fiscal year that ended March 31. The company expects the slowdown in replacement demand for mobile phone handsets to continue in the United States and Japan.
• Motricity appointed Allyn Hebner, former chief accounting officer at T-Mobile USA, to CFO. The announcement comes as three additional industry leaders join Motricity’s executive team, including President and COO Jim Smith, Senior Vice President and General Counsel Richard Leigh and Senior Vice President of Solutions and Services Deepak Dhawan.
• ZTE has partnered with Semtech for IEEE1588v2 product platforms, making the Semtech ToPSync ACS95xx platform its primary choice of synchronization technology for its wireless base station products.
• Freescale Semiconductor introduced a low-power sensor based on micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) technology specifically engineered for handheld portable electronic devices. The 3-axis MMA7660FC accelerometer enhances user interfaces for mobile phones, small appliances and gaming by allowing the user to tap, shake or orient the device for specified commands, the company says.
• Lenco Mobile announced the launch of its new mobile phone statement application, which has a zero carbon footprint impact. The pilot was carried out with a retailer in South Africa.
• Cellufun reports it is one of the top game applications on BlackBerry App World. Cellufun is a mobile virtual community with social games, personal mobile pages, blogs and chat features.
• Motorola has named Domingo Herraiz, a former Department of Justice (DOJ) funding and policy expert, to direct the company’s Government and Enterprise Funding Programs as customers and partners seek funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), also known as the U.S. stimulus package.
• Mongolian operator MobiCom has launched the first high-speed mobile broadband network in the country, powered by HSPA technology from Ericsson. The launch enables MobiCom to introduce mobile broadband services to its subscribers across Mongolia, starting in the capital Ulaanbaatar, where about 40 percent of the country’s 3 million inhabitants live.
