• Qualcomm has appointed Robert Walton to the position of senior vice president and division president of Qualcomm Enterprise Services (QES). In his new role, Walton will lead the division’s business operations and explore new market opportunities for the group, which offers wireless solutions for a variety of enterprises, from vehicle and equipment telematics to mobile device management and M2M communications. Walton succeeds Joan Waltman, who has taken on executive responsibilities in commercializing research and development.
• Cricket Communications, a subsidiary of Leap Wireless International, is using QuickPlay’s OpenVideo media management platform to power its new video service. Cricket’s video service offers popular content including music videos, sports, comedy, entertainment, animation, as well as specific items targeted to Hispanic audiences. The new video download offers customers unlimited video viewing as a $5 a month add-on to Cricket’s monthly rate plans.
• Prepaid operator MetroPCS has begun selling handsets and services at more than 200 Best Buy locations in the 14 markets it is available in. MetroPCS phones purchased from any of the Best Buy Mobile store locations in MetroPCS markets can be activated by pressing *228. MetroPCS does not require a signed contract.
• Bradley Blanken joined Thumbplay as vice president of Carrier Business Development. Previously, he was vice president of carrier sales at iSkoot and also led carrier relations at Third Screen Media.
