• Motorola announced a proof-of-concept trial for its new X24 machine-to-machine wireless module. The module includes mobile WiMAX technology and is based on Motorola’s WTM1000 chipset.
• Ericsson plans to establish an Innovation Center in sub-Saharan Africa to develop mobile applications that will benefit society as a whole, but with a special focus on meeting the needs of poor and rural populations. The initiative will focus on solutions in health, education, agriculture and small business development. The Ericsson Innovation Center will include three application development hubs, in Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya. At first, the Innovation Center will concentrate on mobile applications, such as m-health. The Innovation Center also will develop business cases that enable network operators to introduce and expand mobile broadband services in Africa and other emerging markets.
• Ceragon Networks said its wireless backhaul system, FibeAir 3200T, was selected by an unspecified telecom operator in Eastern Africa. The deployment includes several links built in a 9+1 configuration (9xSTM1 with a single STM1 protection).
