FirstNews Briefs: Sprint, Ultra Mobile, iPass, MobileIron

By Diana Goovaerts | August 5, 2016

Sprint announced the appointment of Jan Geldmacher as its new President of Enterprise. Effective August 22, he will oversee business-to-business sales and business development, supporting enterprise customers with wireless communications solutions and services. Geldmacher will report to Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure.

Geldmacher joins Sprint from Vodafone where he led Vodafone Global Enterprise, a business unit responsible for defining the strategy and operational execution of the company’s relationship with multinational corporate customers. He also previously served as Vodafone’s director of the Enterprise Business Unit, CEO of British Telecom Germany, and in various management and sales positions at European telecom companies.

Ultra Mobile this week launched its Mint SIM, a no-contract, prepaid mobile phone service provider offering unlimited domestic talk, text and data plans.

Mint SIM offers customers no-contract plans in one, three, six or 12-month durations with 2 GB, 5Gb or 10 GB data tiers. Customers can either keep their phone number or activate a new one. The service, which runs on T-Mobile’s network, also offers unlimited plans for as little as $21 per month.

iPass Inc., a provider of global mobile connectivity, announced it has partnered with United Airlines to provide iPass customers with Wi-Fi connection on international and domestic United flights – across United’s entire Wi-Fi enabled fleet of more than 700 aircraft – at no additional cost.

The partnership will take effect during the fourth quarter of 2016.

A new security report from MobileIron shows enterprises are still falling short when it comes to protecting corporate data on mobile apps and devices.

According to the report, only eight percent of companies are enforcing OS updates and less than five percent are using App Reputation or Mobile Threat Detection software. Additionally, 40 percent of companies had missing devices, up from 33 percent in the fourth quarter 2015, and 27 percent of companies had out-of-date security policies, up from 20 percent in the fourth quarter 2015.
