FirstNews Briefs: Telefonica, Tesla, Westell, Telit, Smokio

Telefónica today announced an agreement with Tesla to provide M2M connectivity for the Tesla Model S in Europe. Telefónica and its M2M World Alliance partners will provide connectivity for Model S across multiple countries in Europe, including in Germany and the United Kingdom on Telefónica’s O2 network, in Spain on Movistar, and in the Netherlands on KPN.

Westell Technologies, Inc., a global provider of intelligent site, in-building wireless, and outside plant solutions, has been selected by Telecom Personal Paraguay for comprehensive site management of their base stations throughout Paraguay. The company is among the top three wireless providers in Paraguay.

Telit Wireless Solutions, a global vendor of M2M modules, today announced it has concluded the acquisition of the Automotive Telematics On-board unit Platform (ATOP) business from Netherlands-based NXP Semiconductors. ATOP is an automotive grade solution for vehicle manufacturers to implement eCall or similar functionality from a single package, delivering reduction in complexity and minimized costs in vehicle designs, customer data as well as regulatory compliance.

Smokio today announced a smart, connected e-Cigarette. With wireless smartphone synchronization, Smokio offers information about a user’s consumption, capturing every puff, tracking health improvements and even calculating how much money using Smokio has saved so far. The free Smokio app is available on iOS and Android (Beta version) devices supporting Bluetooth Low Energy. Smokio e-cigarette kits are available on Smokio.com at $129.90.
