FreedomPop Debuts Its First Branded Budget Handset in Spain, U.K.

By Diana Goovaerts | March 8, 2017

Free and low-cost wireless MVNO FreedomPop on Tuesday debuted its first branded handset, the budget-friendly FreedomPop V7.

According to the provider, the phone comes with a dual SIM FreedomPop card for the company’s basic free voice, text, and data service, as well as free WhatsApp use. The device, which is initially available in Spain and the United Kingdom, comes with a 5-inch IPS display, Android Marshmallow running on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 210 processor, a 13 mp rear camera, 5 mp front camera, 16 GB of storage expandable up to 32 GB with a microSD card, and a removable battery.

The phone release is a first for FreedomPop, which hitherto has sold refurbished devices from other vendors.

“We want the entire FreedomPop experience to be simple, convenient and affordable for consumers, and that includes the device you use with your free plan,” Nicholas Constantinopoulos, FreedomPop’s international president, commented. “In order to ensure everyone can get access to wireless service, it was important we offer a high-quality, full-featured Android phone at a price anyone can afford.”

To Constantinopoulos’ point, though it might not be a spec beast, one thing the V7 does have going for it is a dirt cheap price – perfect for budget-conscious FreedomPop users. In the United Kingdom, the V7 is going for an intro price of 59 pounds.

And the V7 won’t remain a foreign wonder for long. FreedomPop said it plans to make the handset available in the United States later this year.
