The Samsung Galaxy S4 will be the first handset to take advantage of Verizon’s LTE network upgrade.
Speaking with Bloomberg, Verizon vice president of network support Mike Haberman said the device will receive an over-the-air software update that will allow it to use Verizon’s AWS airwaves.
The AWS spectrum, which Verizon acquired last year in a deal with Comcast, will boost capacity for the carrier’s LTE network. Haberman said he expects LTE traffic volume will multiply six or seven times over the next few years.
Access to the AWS airwaves is expected to start hitting major markets over the summer and Verizon will continue adding devices that are compatible with the new frequencies.
