Atlanta, GA – GE’s Smallworld Network Inventory solution has been selected by eircom, Ireland’s national telecommunications provider to roll out its new broadband network across Ireland. eircom chose the Smallworld Network Inventory solution to manage its entire physical network in a single system, enabling them to replace multiple disparate systems, including their legacy geospatial platform.
The solution delivers an asset inventory of eircom’s existing nationwide copper access network while facilitating the design and engineering of its next generation access network. The Smallworld Network Inventory platform is an important tool in enabling the provision of higher bandwidth service offerings of voice, Internet and digital television at faster speeds to customers throughout Ireland.
“GE has worked closely with eircom to ensure the successful delivery of a physical network inventory solution, supporting the transformation of their access network into a next-generation network,” said Bryan Friehauf, product line leader—software solutions for GE’s Digital Energy business. “The system has been a catalyst for eircom to streamline its business processes around the planning, engineering and operation of the network, while delivering an accurate and reliable view of the network infrastructure.”
The project was implemented using GE’s Quick Start implementation program to ensure rapid system deployment. Initially, the focus was on migrating existing sources of eircom’s network records into the Smallworld Network Inventory system and centralizing eircom’s data into a single, scalable platform. This allows both local and remote users of the system to access valuable network information, enabling better support of their day-to-day tasks and decisions, thereby helping to improve productivity. Switching to GE’s Smallworld Network Inventory platform has allowed eircom to reduce the systems required to manage its physical network, which in turn lowers operational costs.
“GE’s system has delivered within the timescales and budget expected. The solution provided underpins the design and inventory management of our network, providing us with the necessary design tools needed to expedite our countrywide next generation access roll out,” said Frank Holohan, Head of Access Design at eircom. “This new solution is used by over 90 network designers and is an essential part of our next-generation program.”
GE’s Smallworld Network Inventory solution is proven to meet the latest demands of the telecommunications industry. To date, there are more than 140 deployments of the solution among telecommunications operators worldwide.
