Google launched a new YouTube Music app Thursday in a bid to amplify users’ music discovery experience.
In a post on the YouTube blog, Director of Product Management T. Jay Fowler said the new app will offer a simplified way to access and search for content in YouTube’s massive music library. According to Fowler, the app will include both traditional music videos as well as concert footage, karaoke tracks and embedded lyric videos.
“We want to do even more to support artists and all the fans who turn to YouTube to discover music, so we’re making the experience even better,” Fowler wrote. “With YouTube Music, you’ll get a completely new type of experience, designed to make discovering music on YouTube easier than ever…No matter where you start in the app, the music will never stop. Every song you play or artist you choose will take you on an endless journey through YouTube’s music catalog… You’ll be able to quickly find music videos, tracks, artists and albums, but you’ll also see all the remixes, covers, lyric videos and concert footage that YouTube has to offer.”
According to Fowler, the free app’s home tab will provide recommendations and will create personalized music stations based on a user’s tastes.
Users who wish to amplify the experience even further can do so by signing up for the $10 per month YouTube Red, which will give them access to ad-free listening, offline and off-screen playback and audio mode, which allows for listening without having to load a video.
As of 3 p.m. Thursday, the service had already drawn between 1,000 and 3,000 installs from the Google Play store.
The release comes just two days after T-Mobile announced its new Binge On unlimited video streaming program. Though T-Mobile has already secured services like HBO, Hulu, Netflix, Sling TV and Vevo as participating partners, the Un-Carrier said it is still hoping to add YouTube to the roster.
