Google and Samsung today unveiled the Nexus S, which is the first smartphone to come running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), the latest version of the platform.

The Nexus S is the successor to Google’s original Nexus One, which was manufactured by HTC. The Nexus S features a 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen, near-field communications (NFC), front (5MP) and rear-facing cameras, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 1 GHz application processor.

The Nexus S is a GSM-capable device and will run on either T-Mobile or AT&T’s networks. No details were given on price.

The phone comes as the NFC Forum today announced a certification process for OEMs. NFC technology, which allows users to read information off of everyday objects like stickers and posters that are embedded with NFC chips, is expected to be the next big thing in mobile payments.

According to a press release, the Nexus S will be available unlocked for purchase online and in-store from Best Buy retailers in the United States starting after Dec. 16 and at Carphone Warehouse retailers in the U.K. after Dec. 20.
