HCL Technologies and Sierra Wireless Monitor Beer Keg with Smart Logistics Solution

By Tierney King | February 25, 2019

HCL Technologies, a global technology company, and Sierra Wireless, a provider of fully integrated device-to-cloud solutions for the IoT, are honing in on if companies are leveraging their inventory and obtaining the correct information. For instance, are breweries monitoring their kegs’ temperatures and do they know when they need to make another batch? Now, HCL Technologies and Sierra Wireless have announced the HCL Smart Logistics for Inventory Tracking 1.0 Accelerator powered by SAP Leonardo. This SAP-solution can be integrated with the Sierra Wireless Octave distributed data orchestration platform to deliver a secure solution that could transform how companies manage inventories. The process uses low-power, wide-area (LPWA) wireless technology and also provides near real-time visibility into asset data to help monitor inventory.

If companies are struggling to track critical location, condition, or inventory data, they can deploy IoT-connected sensors, but obtaining action-oriented data to their back-end systems is a more complex task.

“Supply-chain optimization is critical for business success today, and the combination of cellular

technologies, IoT data orchestration, and blockchain adds levels of efficiency that result in significant

resource and financial gains,” says Michael Romero, Senior Vice President, SAP Practice, HCL

Technologies. “HCL’s expertise in IoT and blockchain, combined with Sierra Wireless’ data orchestration

capabilities, allow for a powerful solution.”

In order to develop the Smart Logistics Accelerator, HCL integrated the Sierra Wireless’ Octave distributed data orchestration platform with SAP enterprise business applications, SAP Leonardo, IoT, and blockchain services.

“Understanding asset data will optimize operations and drive strategic growth but accessing that data

securely in a way that is actionable and scalable has not been possible until now,” says Olivier Pauzet,

Vice President and General Manager, IoT Solutions, Sierra Wireless. “Using Octave, our new data

orchestration platform, HCL Technologies’ customers can securely extract, orchestrate, and act on data

from their assets at the edge, send it to the cloud, and gain near real-time visibility to manage the most

important aspects of the business, achieving the full value of data-driven transformation.”

HCL and Sierra Wireless is showcasing the Smart Logistics Accelerator at Mobile World Congress 2019 with a live demonstration of their solution monitoring a beer keg. The near real-time monitoring provides data such as if the beer keg has been opened, how cold the beer is, how much beer has been used, does the brewery know when they expect a new batch, and if the brewery is invoicing a company for only the beer consumed?

The demonstration is connected over an LTE-M LPWA cellular network that features Sierra Wireless’ Smart SIM integrated with an LTE-M module, mangOH Red open source hardware, and the Octave platform to extract data from the keg onto the screen via the SAP Cloud Platform.

The Smart Logistics Accelerator is helping companies monitor their inventory using technologies such as IoT and blockchain, while integrating the SAP business application.
