India isn’t looking to ban BlackBerrys, contrary to previous speculation, telecommunications secretary Siddhartha Behura told Reuters and other media.
The government of India believes all security issues regarding anonymous communications can be resolved, officials said. A meeting is scheduled with India’s top mobile carriers to discuss the logistics.
Those carriers include Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone Essar and BPL Mobile.
A representative of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion could not be reached for comment this morning.
In an unrelated telecommunications controversy in India, the government is expected to soon begin allocating radio frequency for startup carriers, according to a Times of India report.
