Kyocera said on Friday that it plans to stop using batteries from NEC Tokin in its handsets after several NEC Tokin batteries exploded or caught on fire.
Kyocera and Japanese wireless carrier KDDI have recalled 214,000 handsets after 13 people reported minor fires or burns from their handset’s batteries. Three people were reportedly injured.
The two said they plan to replace the volatile batteries with “stronger and safer” NEC Tokin batteries, but the handset maker said it plans to use batteries from other sources in the future.
