Lenovo is buying a patent portfolio for Unwired Planet in a cash deal valued at $100 million.
The 21 patents touch on 3G and LTE as well as other mobility technologies. Under the terms of the agreement, Lenovo is licensed to Unwired Planet’s intellectual property portfolio for multiple years, according to a press release.
“This investment is an extension of Lenovo’s existing intellectual property portfolio,” Jay Clemens, general counsel of Lenovo, said in a statement. “It will serve the company well as we grow and develop our worldwide smartphone and mobile PC Plus business in new markets.”
The large mobile patent buy comes less than two months after Lenovo announced it was buying Motorola from Google for nearly $3 billion. As part of the agreement, Google was able to maintain ownership of the vast majority of the Motorola Mobility patent portfolio.
Operators, including AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Softbank Mobile, Sprint, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone deploy Unwired Planet technology.
