LG Electronics in partnership with Harris announced new technology that the pair claims will enable U.S. TV broadcasters to transmit signals to portable electronics such as cell phones as early as next year. The relatively inexpensive add-on device will make it easier for broadcasters to transmit programming to mobile devices through Mobile Pedestrian Handheld (MPH) broadcasts. The technology requires handset makers, such as LG, to also install reception chips into handsets.
In a statement, LG Chief Technology Officer Woo Paik said that the MPH will be compatible with not just mobile phones, but also MP3 players, wireless navigation systems and laptops. The companies plan to launch the technology at CES this week and continue field trials throughout the year.
