Microsoft yesterday announced that it had reached an agreement with General Dynamics that provides broad coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio for General Dynamics Itronix devices running the Android platform.

Although the companies declined to comment on the specifics of the agreement, a press release indicated that Microsoft will receive royalties from General Dynamics Itronix under the agreement.

“We are pleased to have reached this agreement with General Dynamics Itronix, which is an example of how industry leaders address intellectual property,” said Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of intellectual property and licensing at Microsoft, in a statement.

Since Microsoft launched its IP licensing program in December 2003, the company has entered into more than 700 licensing agreements. The program was developed to open access to Microsoft’s significant R&D investments and its patent and IP portfolio.

General Dynamics Itronix makes military-grade mobile computing devices, including ruggedized laptops, tablets and pocket computers.
