SAN FRANCISCO—Mobile entertainment services provider mSpot plans to expand its streaming movie service to include AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA. Until now, the service has only been available on Sprint.
Daren Tsui, mSpot’s CEO and co-founder, made the announcement at the GigaOM ’09 Mobilize conference. Tsui said the service will include current blockbusters and not just direct-to-DVD titles, saying mSpot had secured contracts with “major Hollywood studios.”
Carriers have traditionally restricted such bandwidth-heavy streaming media services. Tsui says the only reason the service hasn’t been available on a limited basis until now was because it has taken devices and networks time to be able to handle such a service.
Tsui says the service will be available on 30 devices and will run on Wi-Fi, 3G or EDGE networks. Full-length feature films can be rented through the service and can be paid for on the device using a credit card.
