By Staff Author | June 12, 2008

• Hong Kong-based SmarTone-Vodafone is now using Comptel software to manage its mobile broadband traffic. The solution, which includes provisioning, activation and mediation will let SmarTone-Vodafone optimize network capacity and quality of service in real-time for advanced Internet and multimedia services.

• LimeLife, a mobile media company for women, launched its free mobile Web destination site at m.limelife.com. The Website features a daily menu of original lifestyle content which mobile users can access via their mobile phones to stay “in the know, on the go” about the latest fashions, music, celebrity news and games.

• Texas Instruments’ OMAP2430 applications processor is being used in Fujitsu’s new F1100 smartphone. The new handset, which also uses TI’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity technology, is the first Microsoft Windows Mobile phone available with NTT DoCoMo’s FOMA technology. Fujitsu’s 3G F1100 handsets uses the OMAP2430 processor to deliver audio, video and imaging capabilities, including a QVGA display, 1.3-megapixel camera capabilities and a microSD card slot. The phone also leverages TI’s BlueLink Bluetooth and WiLink Wi-Fi (a/b/g) solutions for connectivity capabilities.

• Tellabs filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Network Communications, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.  In its complaint, Tellabs claims Fujitsu infringes on its patent for wavelength division multiplexed optical communication system. Various Fujitsu products are subject to the lawsuit, including reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (ROADM) systems and components that Fujitsu markets within its Flashwave product line.

• Alcatel-Lucent announced plans to conduct a trial of WiMAX Rev-e technology with Thailand-based operator, True Corp. For the trial, Alcatel-Lucent will provide True Corporation with a comprehensive WiMAX solution that operates on the 2.5 GHz frequency band, including base stations, wireless access controller, operation and maintenance center, customer premises equipment – including WiMAX CPE and wireless cards for laptop computers. Alcatel-Lucent also will provide its WiMAX engineering expertise and integration services for the trial, which will take place in Phatumthanee province on the outskirts of Bangkok.

• Germany’s national railway Deutsche Bahn has ordered a GSM-R upgrade from Nortel Networks. Nortel first deployed GSM-R, a wireless technology, specially designed to meet the needs of railways, for Deutsche Bahn in 1999, and the current upgrade is key to Deutsche Bahn’s long-term development plans. Under the terms of the new order, Nortel will simplify the existing network’s base station controllers so that fewer, more powerful pieces of equipment can be used to support additional features for high speed trains. The controllers are being integrated using the existing Nortel-delivered core (NSS), intelligent network (IN), terminals and access (BSS) networks.
