Nokia plans to end its Ovi Music Unlimited Service, previously known as Comes with Music, according to a statement from the company.
Nokia cited lack of traction as the reason it will end the service in 27 countries. Originally intended as a competitor to Apple’s iTunes, Comes with Music launched in 2008 and was bundled with various Nokia handsets.
Nokia says that it will continues to sell phones with 12-month subscriptions to free music downloads in China, India and Indonesia and with 6-month subscriptions in Brazil, Turkey and South Africa.
Those customers who are currently subscribed to the service in those countries effected by the closure will continue to have access to their existing music libraries indefinitely, but they will be unable to download or listen to new tracks.
“We are actively pursuing and planning new music and entertainment services for 2011 with our ecosystem of partners, and will make further announcements at a later date,” said Nokia spokeswoman Kendra Petrone.
