Power Management Unit

By Staff Author | July 8, 2003

austriamicrosystems has developed a highly integrated, real time programmable power management unit (PMU). The AS3601 PMU is designed for mobile applications such as cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras, and more. The AS3601 integrates all major functions for handheld devices: DC/DC step-up and step-down converters, LDOs, a battery charger/fuel gauge, general purpose I/Os (GPIOs), features like white LED drivers, and an audio amplifier( all on a single chip. Real time software control of all functions and regulators using a serial interface provides flexibility, enabling the IC to fully adapt to the system configuration and to optimally manage the power supply. The fully integrated and programmable DC/DC converter can either directly supply low voltage controller cores or act as a pre-regulator to the LDOs, increasing the overall power efficiency. The realized dynamic power control concept directly targets the upcoming 0.18 &#956m and 0.13 &#956m baseband controllers. Each of the 10 high performance LDOs can be programmed individually over a wide voltage range with precision resolution down to 50 mV. The on-chip linear regulators feature extremely high analog performance regarding noise (&lt 30 &#956 Vrms from 100 Hz to 100 kHz) line/load regulation (&lt 1 mV static and &lt 20 mV transient) and power supply rejection (&gt 70 db @ 1 kHz). The on-chip programmable battery charger supports various functions including constant current, constant voltage and trickle charge supporting Li+ and NiMH batteries. The AS3601 PMU is available in a QFN48 package, 7 &#215 7 sq. mm.
