On Saturday, AllThingsD reported that Apple has picked Sept. 10 as the date for its next big iPhone event.
AllThingsD has been reliable in alerting us to upcoming Apple events. The publication correctly pointed to October for the iPad Mini release, which was the last time Apple launched a new product.
Apple has yet to confirm the iPhone launch date.
The “iPhone 5S” is widely expected to be showing up with the same build as the iPhone 5 but with some requisite spec bumps. Improvements to its processor and camera could be accompanied by a rumored fingerprint scanner embedded in the home button.
Speculation and leaks suggest the iPhone 5S bring along a lower-cost buddy for the ride in the form of the colorful “iPhone 5C.” A budget-friendly iPhone would likely be aimed toward helping Apple grab market share in emerging markets where sub-$200 and sub-$100 handsets have thrived.
The final version of iOS 7—featuring a candy-colored redesign of the operating system’s icons and an overhaul of its UI—will likely debut at the event as well.
Refreshing iOS and its device lineup looks more crucial than ever for Apple at this point, with IDC indicating Android devices accounted for nearly 80 percent of global smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2013.
