Those who bought mobile devices in the second quarter preferred smartphones according to new numbers from Nielsen, which reported that 2 out of 3 Americans who acquired a new mobile phone chose a smartphone over a feature phone.
As a result of that trend, total smartphone penetration grew to 54.9 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers during the second quarter.
Android continues to lead the smartphone market in the U.S., with a majority of smartphone owners (51.8 percent) using a handset based on Google’s operating system. Over a third (34.3 percent) of smartphone owners use an Apple iPhone. Blackberry owners represented another 8.1 percent of the smartphone market.
Overall among smartphone owners, Apple had the highest manufacturer share of smartphone handsets. Among recent acquirers who obtained their smartphone during the second quarter, fully 54 percent said they chose an Android handset and 36 percent bought an iPhone.
