Resettable Protection for Li-Ion and Li-Polymer Battery Packs

By Staff Author | January 29, 2002

Tyco Electronics Corporation announced a new addition to its line of PolySwitch&reg PPTC (polymeric positive temperature coefficient) resettbale strap devices, from its Raychem Circuit Protection Division.

Providing both overcurrent and overtemperature protection, the VLP270 device is designed to accommodate the increasing demands for longer run time of cellular phones, notebook computers, PDAs, and other portable electronics. The device helps reduce warranty returns and improves safety by latching into a high resistance state when a short circuit or overvoltage fault occurs. Once the fault and power to the circuit are removed, the device automatically resets for normal operation.

The VLP270 strap device’s narrow, low-profile form factor and axial leads allow it to be welded directly to battery cells, conserving valuable space in portable electronics applications. The device provides hold current ratings of 2.7 A at 25 C and 1.4 A at 60 C. It measures 23.1 mm &#215 5.3 mm &#215 0.8 mm and has a maximum time-to-trip of 5 seconds at 13.5 A. It has a voltage withstand capability of 16 V and typical resistance of 15 mΩ at 25 C.
