Samsung is expanding on its popular Galaxy Note “phablet” with today’s announcement of the Galaxy Note 10.1, which the company says will be available sometime in August.
The Note 10.1 steps boldly onto the same court as Apple’s iPad with a 10.1-inch display, but sporting a stylus-centric user interface that focuses on a drawing, photo editing and note taking.
The Note features a 1.4 GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM for enhanced performance, 5 megapixel main camera and a 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera. Samsung’s S Pen and S Note appear to be the main differentiators from the company’s 10-inch Galaxy Tab slate.
The S Pen is embedded directly in the device and, when removed, automatically launches specially optimized applications, including S Note, S Planner, Crayon physics, Adobe Photoshop Touch, and Polaris Office.
Samsung has been vocal about its success with the over-sized 5.3-inch Galaxy Note. On June 1, the company said that it had sold 7 million of the original Galaxy Note smartphones, or a little over 1 million of the devices per month.
The Galaxy Note 10.1 comes in three connectivity options: Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi and HSPA+ connectivity, which are both available at launch, and WiFi and LTE, which will be available later this year.
