Samsung will start selling smartphones this year that run on the open-source Tizen operating system.
Samsung said in an emailed statement that it is “planning to launch a new Tizen-operated device within this year and will continue to expand the lineup according to market conditions.”
The company refrained from offering any further details, saying that specifics pertaining to country and carrier or time of launch will be announced later.
The LiMo Foundation and The Linux Foundation announced Tizen back in September of 2011, after scrapping MeeGo.
Hosted at The Linux Foundation, Tizen is a standards-based, cross-architecture software platform, which supports multiple device categories including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and in-vehicle infotainment systems.
