Samsung Delivering Live 5G Broadcast at MWC19

By Bevin Fletcher | February 20, 2019

As MWC19 Barcelona prepares to kick off next week, Samsung has announced it will deliver a 5G live video broadcast of the GSMA’s official media channel during the event.

Samsung’s 5G network will support the transmission of Mobile World Live TV, marking the channel’s first-ever trail of 5G live broadcasting.

In addition to a global live stream, the channel will air throughout the Fira Gran Via event venue, as well as the lobbies and guest rooms of more than 280 hotels in Barcelona.

The broadcast will leverage Samsung’s 5G radio access unit and 5G router.

“We are thrilled to demonstrate how our latest technology can make an outstanding difference in creating new possibilities for broadcast at MWC19 Barcelona, the largest trade show in the mobile industry,” said GY Seo, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Sales & Marketing, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics, in a statement. “Samsung is committed to meeting market demands of larger capacity and ultra-low latency attributed to the advancement of the entertainment industry.”

In previous years Mobile World Live TV has used fiber-based backhaul and 4G cameras to support the channel’s live transmission.

“For 2019 we are excited to broadcast using Samsung’s 5G network, enabling true seamless transmission without latency,” said Justin Springham, Director of Media Content and Broadcast, GSMA, in a statement. “Mobile World Live TV and Samsung will be at the forefront of offering immersive user experiences thanks to this 5G broadcast.”

Samsung says networks supporting live broadcasts need to be able to support seamless transmission of high-quality and large capacity content through TVs and other electronic devices with ultra-low latency.

The broadcast is slated to air from 4pm CET Sunday, Feb. 24 through 4 pm Thursday, Feb. 28.
