Samsung and Google today announced an Oct. 19 unveiling in Hong Kong of a new Android device that will come running Ice Cream Sandwich, the next iteration of Google’s mobile platform that is optimized to run on both tablets and smartphones.
The unveiling originally had been scheduled for Oct. 11 at CTIA’s Enterprise and Applications show but was cancelled. Samsung said that given the news of Steve Jobs’ death, the time was not right for the unveiling of a new product.
The new device is expected to be the next Google-branded Nexus smartphone, which has been teased in a Samsung video. “We are unpacking our new Android phone in concurrence with Google,” Samsung said in a statement but did not disclose the name or any further details on the new smartphone.
Because the event takes place at 10 a.m. Hong Kong time, residents in the United States will have to stay up late to catch the action. Interested parties can tune in to a live stream of the event at www.youtube.com/android at 10 p.m. Eastern on Oct. 18.
News of the unveiling comes as Apple officially launched the iPhone 4S today, which saw record preorders for 1 million units in the first 24 hours of availability.
