Oregon Senator Gordon Smith is sponsoring a bill that seeks to ban unwanted text-messages. Called the “Do Not Text Act of 2008,” the bill would protect wireless customers from unwanted commercial solicitor texts. According to the Portland Business Journal, Smith’s bill is co-sponsored by Florida Senator Bill Nelson and would extend the Do-Not-Call Registry to include Do-Not-Text protections for those on the list.
“This bill fights back to end the relentless attack of wireless spam,” Smith reportedly e-mailed the Journal. “It’s a problem that can strike at the pocketbooks of cell phone users at anytime, and we must end the practice.”
According to the report, Smith claims that spam comprises nearly 80% of all text messages sent each day.
