TOKYO – Ericsson today announced that its VoLTE solution was selected by Japanese carrier SoftBank.
Ericsson says its VoLTE solution will provide SoftBank customers with telecom-grade HD voice, video calling over LTE. The company also claims its VoLTE solution will allow SoftBank to better utilize its spectrum.
Ericsson is currently upgrading SoftBank’s existing mobile core network with a complete IMS core, which includes the Multimedia Telephony Application Server.
Until SoftBank achieves nationwide LTE coverage, handover of ongoing voice calls from LTE to the Japanese carrier’s WCDMA network will also be handled by Ericsson.
Ericsson’s VoLTE infrastructure will serve as the basis for SoftBank’s future network virtualization plans and Telecom Cloud introduction.
Ericsson’s Jan Signell, Head of North East Asia markets, made the announcement at the company’s annual Business Innovation Forum, which is being held this week in Tokyo, Japan.
